Monitoring, assertion-checking, distributed hash table, Internet
Attempts to provide application-level predicate evaluation and monitoring have not provided for the scalability and fault-resilience of the monitoring function. To ease the deployment of such services, this paper proposes an overlay-based Internet Scale Monitoring and Assertion Checking infrastructure (ISMAC) that distributes the monitoring task using distributed hash tables. In this approach, the moni-toring nodes are decoupled from the monitored source nodes and the application end-hosts which request predicate evaluation, leading to increased resiliency and flexibility. The basic approach is best effort, but can be strengthened to provide stronger guarantees.
